This course helps students improve English reading comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking, and discussion skills through the study of short stories and poetry.
Students explore a variety of literary works while developing confidence in reading and expressing ideas in English.
American Short Stories & Poems (432 total classroom hours)
This course is designed to meet the needs of the high- intermediate and advanced students. The variety of reading selections expands the literary horizons of students. Authors studied include Mark Twain and Ernest Hemingway to Langston Hughes, Ray Bradbury, and Shirley Jackson. The understanding of the structure and content of the readings creates a higher level of communication for the student. Students also improve grammar skills and vocabulary by reading "real" American literature rather than textbooks.
After completing this course students will be able to:
Read and analyze literary texts with greater confidence
Understand figurative language and literary themes
Expand academic and everyday vocabulary
Participate actively in classroom discussions
Express ideas more clearly in spoken and written English
